Slept pretty solid last night and got an early start, pushing off a little before 7am. I met another tourer when I arrived at the campground last night, Jeff Lee who is going up the Atlantic coast and then possibly the Northern Tier.
His blog is here so you should give that a read. Do it. Decided to ride together for the day which was good since he is going at a quicker pace than I so it forced me to bust my ass a little bit. Ride was more of the same scenery as the last several days but most of the roads were light on traffic and even though my cycle computer STILL is not operational, I knew we were making pretty good time. Made it 70 miles to Andrews, SC, (The home of Chubby Checker!) by 2 pm and started scouting places to stay in town since there are no campground anywhere near. Passing by the library we ran in to a group of three guys headed down to Florida. One dude started out in Brooklyn and is riding a single speed with a pretty high gearing. In case some of you readers don’t comprehend the significance of that, it is intense and that dude is a beast. Turns out there was only one motel in town. On first sight, it was pretty typical of the ones I’ve been coming across. Pulling into the parking lot, though, there is something interesting being “prepared”.
From the looks of it, bulk amounts of corriander and red chilis, the makings for curry powder were being dried on what is clearly a BED SHEET FROM THE MOTEL at which we about to stay. Owner was a stone face hard ass who took no humor in questions about his outside operation. Motel was $40 which is pretty standard but no WiFi. Stayed up pretty late shelling pistachios and watching weather channel. Excitation station, I know.
