My name is Robert Ford. After graduating with a degree in journalism from the University of Arizona in December ‘07, I realized that not only was a I burnt out and disenchanted with journalism, but was overall entirely unready to enter the real world. That, combined with a fondness for cycling and the bicycle itself, is the short version of why I am taking this ride. Through my photography, I hope to be able to share with others whatever it is I take away from this trip, and put that degree to use also.

Hey Robert –
Bon voyage! Be safe, be careful, and most of all, HAVE FUN!
Kristin
Hi! Good luck! Just found your site and journal. I’m leaving Ohio in July on a perimeter trip, but same direction you’re going. Haven’t done the figuring here….will you catch me? Will you be ahead of me? It would be fun to meet. I’m still struggling to get my website and journal underway, but check in now and then.
You are my kinda people! Have fun! -chrisco
I read your first phrases and realized we are kindred in spirit. Late in life I too am needing revitalization and a rediscovery of the land. Perhaps I am just have a late midlife crisis.
In 2010 I will turn 60. I have had a youths experience cycling and toured from Orange County CA to San Diego and back several times in the 60’s. Yes the 1960’s.
Before I pass on I too would like to accomplish my tour of dreams. It was always a dream from scouting in the 60’s and as an adult in the 70’s and 80’s coaching youngsters in cycling; to do a 48 state, self contained, solo tour. Now as I approach the last chance to do this I am starting to assemble resources gear, and plan to execute the dream.
I’ll watch with enthusiasm this site and cheer you on. I like your first flat experience!! I think your strategy makes sense and is one I had never thought of. Fixed many a flat on the road but never in five minutes.
How are you at spokes? I have never had to contend with that chore but as i look towards a new machine I am thinking of a Bob Beckman Sakitt with 48 spoke 26″ wheels.
Must admit the research is fun and the tech challenging. I made my first tours on a Schwinn Varsity three speed! Never had to deal with a free wheel or cassette. on a long trip. I’ll watch with interest your tech tidbits and routing experiences.
So far all I’ve done is gotten on a few mailing lists and researched routes using google maps. I’ll happily consider all the advice any one offers.
Best to you, I invite you to stay in touch if possible personally. See me in Rochester Minnesota!

I met Rob in Ocracoke where we both survived the mosquitos… then on the road the next day. Just ran into him this morning (June 2nd) coming out of the camp from hell again! I realize he’s doing a much better job on his chronicle than I am. I hope to run across his path again. Admire his journey.
Best,
dg
